St. Mary’s 6th, 7th, and 8th grades make up the Junior High wing. Besides getting to add a few more polo colors to their wardrobe, St. Mary’s Junior High students stand out in some important ways. As leaders and role models, they set the standard for the rest of the student body by leading on Student Council; excelling in sports and robotics; being mentors in the band; serving as buddies for preschoolers and Kindergarteners; and setting an example of service, academics, faith, and leadership.

St. Mary’s Junior High academics include a challenging, competitive curriculum in small class sizes. A state-of-the-art science lab, personal Chromebooks, and SmartBoards make the best use of technology in a collaborative learning environment. In addition to daily study and practice in the core subjects of English, math, science, religion, and social studies, Junior High students enjoy weekly classes in art, computers, Spanish, music, and physical education. St. Mary’s School graduates excel in high school as students and leaders.

In St. Mary’s close-knit, family environment, Junior High students focus on Christian service. As Kindergarten buddies, 8th graders sit with the Kindergarten class at All-School Mass twice per week to serve as role models of respect and reverence. The subjects of purity and family life are studied in the context of St. John Paul II’s Theology of the Body.

Experiential learning is a big part of all grade levels at St. Mary’s, but it culminates in the Junior High experience of field trips, group projects, and hands-on activities. The entire 7th grade class attends Space Camp in Huntsville, AL each year. 8th graders attend a team-building, problem-solving experience at Trout Lodge. Hands-on experiments and projects throughout the Junior High promote collaboration and discovery.

Junior High students have many opportunities outside the classroom to challenge themselves, practice their skills, and make friends. They represent St. Mary’s School in the local Parochial Schools Athletic Conference in various athletics programs — basketball, baseball, volleyball, track and field, and tennis. In the Edwardsville Catholic Schools Band, the Junior High students perform and compete as well as mentor the newest band members. Theater, Model UN, Science Olympiad, Engineering Club, Speech Meet, Liturgical Choir, and Art competitions, concerts, and showcases let our Junior High students shine in their favorite activities.
